Yellow lentils tempered with cumin, garlic and dried chillies — comfort food at its simplest.
Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow moong or toor dal
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 tsp ginger, grated
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 3 garlic cloves, sliced
- 2 dried red chillies
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 2 tbsp ghee
- Salt and lemon juice to taste
- Fresh coriander
Method
- Pressure cook dal with tomato, onion, turmeric and salt for 3 whistles.
- Mash the cooked dal well.
- In a small pan, heat ghee until hot.
- Add cumin seeds, let them sizzle.
- Add garlic slices and fry until golden.
- Add dried red chillies and fry 30 seconds.
- Pour this tadka over the dal.
- Add lemon juice and fresh coriander. Serve with rice.
