Method

  1. Pressure cook toor dal with turmeric until soft. Mash well.
  2. Soak tamarind in 1 cup warm water, extract pulp.
  3. Boil vegetables in tamarind water until tender.
  4. Add cooked dal and sambar powder. Simmer 15 minutes.
  5. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, cumin, curry leaves, dried chillies and asafoetida.
  6. Pour tempering over sambar. Garnish with coriander.
